Smart Indoor Air Quality Monitor Netatmo

There are many weather stations, CO2 monitors, and environmental devices available to consumers, but none of them look very nice. They’re either a traditional design — characterized by big LCD screens — like those made by Oregon Scientific, or thermostat-style products mostly designed for industrial use. If you want a device that doesn’t look like either of these, Netatmo’s Healthy Home Coach stands almost alone. The Healthy Home Coach is unobtrusive, and simple to use, but we do question its absolute helpfulness. When I closed the window, I knew it was getting more stuffy without checking the app. And if it’s noisy, my ears do a pretty solid job of letting me know.

For example, we closed the window and turned on the TV while writing this review. Less than 30 minutes later, the Healthy Home Coach said air quality was deteriorating at 655ppm, temperature was up to 24.1 degrees, and sound is at 51db. None were high enough to trip a notification alert, but when they do get to that point, you’ll get actionable advice on how to improve the situation. It may sound fairly basic, but many lifestyle products — from digital thermometers to fitness bands — just give you the facts, rather than telling you where to make improvements. Knowing the conditions in a specific room can be quite helpful, but that's what the indoor module of the weather station is for.

Among other things, the CO2 concentration is used to display the air quality in the room. This is where the Netatmo Home Coach steps in and actively notifies about the current air quality. While we’re writing this, the Home Coach app says our environment is healthy, with a 23.7 degree centigrade temperature, 53 percent humidity, 36db of ambient sound, and 482ppm CO2. A window was open in the office, but it wasn’t very wide, which tripped up the Home Coach a bit soon after we plugged it in. Rather than just saying the air quality was poor, the app said we may feel drowsy, or find it hard to concentrate, and that opening a window would help. We opened the window wider, and sure enough, the air quality improved.

This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. While this is helpful, the way it’s presented isn’t great, and could be clearer. Although it refers to the exact hour when it counts back, it uses the letter H as a suffix – H13, or H19, for example. This could be misinterpreted, and we suspect it’s to do with an original French language version .

These two options are some of the most critical for measuring what’s actually going on in your home. • The App displays advice to help you create a healthier environment. • The App‘s color-coded background makes it easy to see how healthy the room where you put your Healthy Home Coach is. He's reviewed everything from vacuum cleaners to beer brewing robots in pursuit of the perfect smart home. He wants the smart home to make him feel powerful, and it's getting there. It’s a real shame that the Healthy Home Coach can’t measure some of the more harmful elements, such as particulate matter or VOCs .

Data Linked to You

Rivals include makers of air purifiers that also serve as air quality monitors, such asCoway’s Airmega,Uhoo, Molekule, and Sprimo. According to Netatmo, the advice takes your specific family into account. For instance, if you have a baby, you'll be told if you're keeping your home too cold for the well being of the child. And you can monitor noise levels and the rest of these measurements in real time and see their recorded history in Netatmo's iOS or Android app.

While the apps use standard protocols (TLS1.2), the communication of the Netatmo devices with the manufacturer’s cloud seems to use proprietary encryption. Even if the data transmitted in this case is not highly confidential, we would recommend encryption using standard protocols. Tap a measurement for an expanded view, but don’t expect to find graphs, long-term data, or anything overly complex. Simplicity is the aim here, and all you get is how your current data compares overall, on a little thermometer-style graphic. It’s perfectly understandable, and you really don’t need anything more.

The Healthy Home Coach monitors the environment, works with HomeKit, and gives tangible advice to help you make your home a better place to live. Without particulate matter or VOC sensors, the Healthy Home Coach doesn’t respond to other factors, such as cleaning sprays putting harmful chemicals into the air. Without these sensors, it’s hard to take steps to really clean up every aspect of your home’s air. Safety starts with understanding how developers collect and share your data. Data privacy and security practices may vary based on your use, region, and age.

Even then, you can’t set a threshold, and Apple Home can only trigger an automation when high levels of carbon dioxide are detected. Monitoring your home’s air quality is big news at the moment, with a raft of products all launching at the same time. The cheapest product is the Netatmo Healthy Home Coach, which keeps the cost down by using fewer sensors. Hopefully, you'll also be able to use the Home Coach to set up triggers via Apple's HomeKit app, so a fan automatically turns on if the air quality dips below a certain point. That's something we'll look for when we test it for a full review. All data is kept for 24 hours, so you can step back in time to see what the measurements were like in the past.

The developer provided this information and may update it over time. With Healthy Home Coach, parents can also check the data history of the family sleeping times to understand how to reduce sound pollution. I would only change fixing random graph crashes and support dark theme the white background is so bright with light text make reading summary screen a bit difficult at least for me.

This release contains a fix for an issue that could prevent the product from being installed. You receive a tracking link to follow the delivery of your repaired product. The Healthy Home Coach is made of metal and plastic, so it should survive being knocked off a shelf, and it has excellent build quality. Provided the app is kept up to date, it should serve you well for many years to come. Netatmo has updated and improved its apps for other products, which bodes well for the future.

On the one hand, this is required for the setup of the Netatmo Weather/Home Coach devices, since due to the Android permissions structure, this is the only way to communicate via Bluetooth. According to the privacy policy, the location of the device is also transferred to Netatmo, for example, if the app crashes. The position of the weather station is determined even if the data is not shared with Netatmo Weathermap – the manufacturer should take further action here. If you live in an open-plan home, you may want one in the kitchen area and one in the living area to ensure accurate readings. We moved the Healthy Home Coach around the house, and into a large open-plan office; it operated with issue after around 30 minutes to adjust to its new situation. Will you have to decode stats, figures, and complicated chemical abbreviations to get the most from the Healthy Home Coach?

Given that other Netatmo products have an IFTTT channel, this is bound to be added in the near future, but for now the Healthy Home Coach is less flexible than its competition. The graph could easily be improved just in terms of how it plots and labels the data. For example when I zoom so I can comfortably see the last two weeks and a bit, the graph only renders one data point per day. It could easily show for example 12 or at least 6 points per day, so it's possible to see how the value changes through the day, and whether it's different on the weekends. Also, in many cases there's only one label visible on the time axis, so the time scale is not apparent. • Connect as many devices as you want and monitor all your rooms using a single App.
